About Us

1. Assam Rifles ‘Sentinels of North East’ was raised in 1835 with 750 combatants for guarding the British settlements and tea estates from the depredation of marauding tribals. It is the oldest Para Military Force of our country which was used by the British to extend their administrative control over the interior and frontier region of the North East.

2. The journey of development of the North East and that of the Assam Rifles has been concurrent with the existing townships of Aizwal, Lunglei, Kohima, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Haflong, Tura etc having grown around the initial outposts established by the Force.

3. The Force took part in the Middle East operations during World War I and won 76 gallantry awards. During World War II it took part in the Battle of Kohima and helped in the management of the refugee influx from Myanmar. During the Indo-China conflict of 1962, the force bore the initial onslaught of the Chinese aggression delaying and holding the enemy to enable the Army to occupy the forward positions. During 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars bulk of the Army was withdrawn from Manipur and Nagaland and responsibility of law and order of these states developed on the Assam Rifles. From 1988 to 1990 the Force took part in the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka and also fought insurgency in J&K.
