The first games involved in Olympics were nine sports : athletics, fencing, cycling, aquatics (Swimming), gymnastics, tennis, shooting, weightlifting and wrestling, contested in 43 events by 280 athletes from 12 countries.
At the Paris Olympics of 1900, the sports list had grown to 18 in 95 events by 997 participants, which included 6 female archers. While the original group ( including athletics, swimming, gymnastics, equestrian sports and fencing) has remained constant, the total number of sports has kept increasing. Basketball was introduced in 1936, judo in 1964, table tennis in 1988 and beach volleyball in 1996. Some other disciplines of the main sports have laso been introduced: trampoline (gymnastics) in 200: BMX (cycling) in 2008.
