AMAZING FACTS ABOUT THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH : THE OLYMPICS
First Olympic Summer Games were held in 1896 at Athens and Olympic Winter Games were held in 1924. Since then every 4th year games are continuously being held, except in 1940 and 1944, when the games were cancelled due to World War II.
The first games involved in Olympics were nine sports : athletics, fencing, cycling, aquatics (Swimming), gymnastics, tennis, shooting, weightlifting and wrestling, contested in 43 events by 280 athletes from 12 countries. At the Paris Olympics of 1900, the sports list had grown to 18 in 95 events by 997 participants, which included 6 female archers. While the original group ( including athletics, swimming, gymnastics, equestrian sports and fencing) has remained constant, the total number of sports has kept increasing. Basketball was introduced in 1936, judo in 1964, table tennis in 1988 and beach volleyball in 1996. Some other disciplines of the main sports have laso been introduced: trampoline (gymnastics) in 200: BMX (cycling) in 2008.
A Swedish shooter, Oscar Swahn (1847 – 1927) won his last medal at the age of 72 yrs in 1920 Olympics, which made him the oldest person to win an Olympic medal. He was also the oldest sportsman who competed at the Olympics at such an age of 72 yrs.
One of the most popular International Olympic Committee(IOC) programs is the Olympic Day celebrations every June 23, the date in 1894 when the IOC was formed. The great majority of the National Olympic Committees use this date to focus local interest on the Olympic movement.
Rio is the first South American city to host the Olympic Games in 2016.
The 1912 Olympics was the last time that gold medals were solid gold. Since then, they've been silver with gold plating.

  • The Olympic rings : The Olympic symbol (the rings) symbolizes the union of the 5 continents and the meeting of athletes from all over the world at the Olympic Games in a spirit of fair competition and good friendship, the ideal preached by Baron de Coubertin. The colours of theOlympic rings are blue, yellow, black, green and red, on a white background. At least one of these colours is found in the flag of every nation of the world. The colours do not represent the continents.
  • The Olympic flame and torch
  • The Olympic flag : The flag which carries the Olympic symbol was made in Paris and was created by Pierre de Coubertin and first displayed at the Olympic Congress in 1914. It was first hoisted in the Olympic stadium in Antwerp in 1920 during the Games of the Olympiad.
  • The Olympic motto : A motto was also carried on the flag "Citius Altius Fortius" "Faster Higher Stronger". It was devised by Father Henri Didon, a Dominican teacher and friend of de Coubertin.
  • The Olympic hymn : The Olympic hymn was adopted by the IOC in 1958. It is based on a Cantata by Costis Palamas and was set to music by Spirou Samara in 1896.
  • The Olympic medals : The Olympic medals reflect the excellence and achievement of the Olympic athletes.
